Merganzer is the experimental music project of Violinist Mika Posen (formerly of Timber Timbre, Agnes Obel). Expanding on the soundscapes, ambient textures, and melodic interludes she created for numerous bands over the past decade, Merganzer brings Posen’s musical craft to a slow-burning fruition. Using violin loops, layered synths, delicate pianos, and homemade beats, her expressive pop-noir songs and minimalist instrumental pieces cross genres and transcend time periods.

Hailed as “captivating, minimal, and tasteful,” Merganzer’s first full length record Mirror Maze was released in November 2015 and brought her to a number of notable Canadian festivals including X-Avant, Sled Island, Wavelength, Dawson City Music Festival, and Megaphono. She has opened for artists such as Julia Holter, Andy Shauf, and Pauline Oliveros, and collaborated with media artists such as Sonia Stefan and Timothy I. Smith.

Merganzer’s second album, Montage, is an instrumental work that wavers between minimalist, ambient and neo-classical, conjuring a soundtrack for both inquiry and quietude. Written primarily during a residency at Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island in 2015, Montage is a rumination about place and self, an atmospheric rendition of transition, and an impression of the idea of home.

Originally titled "My Heart Palpitates," this 2019 creation by film director Sonya Stefan is edited to "Montage," an instrumental piece of new music by Merganzer. MY HEART PALPITATES A meditative video on family and landscape. The work was filmed on expired 16mm ends, without any effects, and features one young character.

Merganzer's second full-length album "Montage" will be released on October 18, 2019.

As part of our 2017 festival, Mirror Mountain presented Passé Composé, a collaborative live performance by Ottawa musicians Merganzer (Mika Posen & Pascal Delaquis) and Montreal media artist Sonya Stefan based on the theme of transformation. Stefan was joined for part of the performance by media artist Emma Roufs. The performance was co-presented by Ottawa Showbox.

“Cloud Cover” performed live at the Mirror Mountain Festival in December 2016 as part of “Passé Composé,” a collaboration with media artist Sonya Stefan (live film).
